Introducing ‘Styled by Science’: Story Behind My Blog

Hello there! I’m Vianna, a creative who works in science and fashion. A few years ago, I graduated with a degree in Fiber Science (what’s that?) and moved back to New York City, where I worked at one of Manhattan’s very few textile testing laboratories. Tucked inside the upper floor of a pre-war building, the place was lauded as the powerhouse for all types of material testing. Looking back, I was lucky to experience something that related to my major so well. I hungered to do it all, and this memory is what set the stage for my textile science blog.

Work was always exciting, every week a new project. However, as I later confided in one of my co-workers, I also had a yearning to start something creative of my own. I did not have the words for it three years ago, nor the confidence to share what that reality would look like. But I started with what I loved: curating outfits that were classic and feminine, staging photoshoots around the city, and seizing every opportunity to share about fashion through the lens of science.

I noticed there were a paucity of blogs that even discuss this topic, and that my heart lit up at the thought of starting one myself. So what’s to stop me?

The Prototyping

Initially, I built out my Instagram platform dedicated to fashion and textile science. For the past two years, I shared life snapshots around the city, captioning them with bits of science. Most were produced and edited on my iPhone, captured by loving friends who nudged me out of my awkwardness. (Welcome to the real me) I can’t thank them enough for their support.

Then when COVID-19 hit and gatherings became less frequent, I brainstormed other ways of creating content that were true to my vision. I played around with flat-lay photography, infographic design, and 1,001 ways to self-photograph with a tripod. Soon, my ideas evolved and a narrative developed. I knew the story I longed to tell needed to exist in a space of its own.

The Product

Last month, I revisited that conversation I had with my coworker and faced my fears: I started my blog, and named it ‘Styled by Science.’ I describe this blog as my own digital space to share about fabric care, materials science, and tips for low-waste living.

Each time I completed a mini milestone, my heart would beat a bit faster. Selecting a domain, check. Customizing my theme, check. Creating an initial repository of posts, check. Learning the in and outs of SEO…

The Progress

Truth is, much of this blog is still a work in progress and I have much more to learn. While that does not excuse me presenting my best content, I felt the pressure of delivering the perfect product held me back from launching. As I read more stories from experienced bloggers, I realize the best step was just to get started, to keep building the momentum of what I already started. The results will follow.

So here you have it: the past two year’s worth of dreaming, which finally amounted to my very own textile science blog. I hope it does not disappoint, and that you enjoy these few posts I have written so far. Stay posted for more exciting content, as I brainstorm more relevant topics for the future. Thank you for stopping by 🙂
