Why Demi Boot Jeans are My New Favorite Denim Silhouette

There have been recent murmurs that *gasp* skinny jeans are no longer in style. Even if it weren’t true, I was quite ready to begin exploring new denim silhouettes. Skinny jeans still play a crucial role in my wardrobe. However, there is comfort with wearing less-clingy pairs too. In the spring, I purchased my very first demi boot jeans from J. Crew. Then came another, and another…until I realized I really love this silhouette!

What is the Demi Boot Jean?

The Demi Boot is described by Madewell as a twist on the skinny jeans with a subtle flare-out. Compared to boot cut jeans, this flare is gradual and begins below the knee. Meanwhile, the upper half (area from hips to thigh) remains more fitted. I love that the Demi Boot is a flattering hybrid between the skinny and boot cut silhouette.

More commonly, I have seen the Demi Boot used in cropped denim. I find the kick-out flare to look most stylish this way! Favorite retailers that carry this silhouette: Banana Republic | J. Crew | Madewell.

*Update (1/7/23): Due to the popularity of the Cali Demi Boot, it looks like a lot of sizes have sold out. Here is a similar alternative from Mother Denim that has great reviews.

Madewell Cali Demi Boot Review

Madewell is a popular denim destination, but the brand definitely comes at a premium. I was able to purchase their Cali Denim Boot for 40% off during the Black Friday sale. Unsurprisingly, I loved them!

  • Sizing: I am normally between a 25 / 26, and ordered size 25 in these. Jeans are notorious for stretching out over time, and usually after a few wears, the waist becomes totally loose on me. For this pair, I sized down and it worked out great!

  • Comfort: My Cali Demi Boot jeans feel sturdy and really mold to my body shape. There is just the right amount of stretch (2% spandex), while still maintaining the ‘rugged’ denim feel that I love. Keep in mind though that the texture and softness will be different with their Tencel blend. Generally, this material makes the fabric appear less rugged and much softer/smoother.
  • Ways to Style: One thing I love about the Demi Boot is how well it looks with different pairs of shoes. So far, I have styled mine with ankle boots, mules, and sneakers. They all work!

Styling my Jeans Throughout the Seasons

I own a pair of this silhouette in white, light blue, and black. You can see how I styled these throughout the season.

  • Third Look: Spring outfit try-on from J. Crew – similar Demi Boot Jeans linked
