Summer in NYC is a paradox of scorching sidewalks and aggressively air-conditioned offices. And the key to navigating these tricky temperatures is lightweight layering. It’s the best way to stay comfortable, covered, and chic, but also sun-safe. This post dives into 3 of my go-to breezy summer office layers. I hope it inspires you with outfit options if you feel stuck on how to dress for the season.

Breezy Summer Office Layer #1: Crochet or Open-Knit Sweater
Often associated with beachy vibes, a lightweight crochet sweater can be surprisingly sophisticated for the office. Although crochet is not a ‘knit’, you can achieve a similar effect with openwork knit fabrics and even something finer like pointelle. Next, choose neutral tones like ivory, or beige for maximum versatility.
Why It Works: The open weave allows for excellent airflow, preventing you from overheating in the outdoors. It adds a touch of texture and visual interest to a simple outfit, draping beautifully over a simple top. You can pair this piece with tailored pants, or a skirt like the way I styled it here.

Summer Office Layer #2: Linen Button-Down
Linen is the quintessential summer fabric for breathability and effortless style. It can be styled so many ways, but what I love most is its relaxed charm. One of my favorite ways to style this piece for the office is over a midi / maxi dress. Simply button halfway, and then tie it at the waist. Optionally, you can tuck the knot in for a cleaner look. Here’s my favorite under $50 linen button-down that comes in so many colors.

Layer #3: Cotton Gauze Button-Down
Compared to crisp linen, cotton gauze is a softer and airier alternative. It has a loose, open weave, which creates a very lightweight, and often puckered texture. I equally love this option in my list of favorite breezy summer office layers. Outside of the office, I also love it as a summer beach cover-up!

Mastering the art of lightweight layering is key to staying comfy this summer. By incorporating pieces like a delicate crochet sweater, a breezy cotton gauze button-down, and a classic linen button-down into your wardrobe, you’ll be prepared for any temperature shift.
